The State Competition in New York consists of all of the official Science Olympiad events plus two Trial events. Trial/Pilot events are included to allow teams to provide feedback on which events they would like to see added to the National competition. To insure that the Trial events receive a fair assessment, the points received by each team in these events count towards the determination of the State Champion. For the 2011 - 2012 school year, the Trial/Pilot events included in the New York State Competition are:
B-Division:
Helicopter Egg Drop: Students will construct a device which uses a helicopter blade to safely transport a raw chicken egg from a specified height to the floor.
Buoy Oh Buoy! (Physical Science Lab): Teams will compete in activities and answer questions about the determination of density of solids, liquids, and gases; the determination of concentrations; the behavior of gases according to the gas laws (Boyle's Law, Charles Law and Pascal's Principle); and using Archimedes's Principle.
C-Division:
Magnetic Levitation: Students will build up to two self-propelled “vehicles” powered by electrical energy supplied by batteries. The energy supplied by the batteries will be used to turn a propeller(s) and move the vehicle down a magnetic track. Students will also answer questions about magnetism, magnets, and their uses. Resources for this event can be found here.
Geologic Mapping: Students will demonstrate understanding in the construction and use of topographic maps, geologic maps, and seismic reflection profiles and their use in forming interpretations regarding geohazard risk and subsurface structure.
