New York State Science Olympiad B Division Regional Information

The State competition in New York consists of all of the official Science Olympiad events plus two Trial/Pilot events. Trial/Pilot events are included to allow teams to provide feedback on which events they would like to see added to the National competition. To insure that the Trial/Pilot events receive a fair assessment, the points received by each team in these events count towards the determination of the State Champion. For the 2008 - 2009 school year, the Trial/Pilot events included in the New York State Competition are:
B-Division:

Car of Tomorrow: Students will build up to two self-propelled “vehicles” powered by electrical energy supplied by batteries. The energy supplied by the batteries will be used to turn a propeller(s) and move the vehicle down a magnetic track. Resources for this event can be found here.
Sumo Bots: Prior to the competition, students must design and construct a competing robot (bot) that will attempt to force an opponent’s robot from a defined arena. The rules have been changed from last year, so please make sure to download the new rules. Also, be sure to checkthe Rules Clarifications page often.

Solar Power: Students will demonstrate their knowledge and process skills needed to solve problems and answer questions regarding alternative energy sources, including designing a solar collector with a log of design modifications and data collected.
